Madam Prothonotary Aylen was born in Ottawa, Ontario. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Queen’s University in 1997 and a Bachelor of Laws degree from Queen’s University in 2000. She was called to the Ontario Bar in 2002. Prothonotary Aylen was a partner with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP where her practise focussed on international and domestic arbitration (as counsel and arbitrator), public procurement and government contracting, trade law, administrative law, Access to Information Act litigation, commercial litigation and business immigration.
She was ranked by client and peer rating guides as a leading lawyer in Canada. Prothonotary Aylen is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and Past Chair of the North American Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. She regularly taught programs on international arbitration and arbitration award writing, and spoke frequently on conflicts of interest, professional ethics, commercial arbitration and commercial litigation. She served on numerous committees with The Advocates’ Society and was past Chair and Director of the Sopinka Cup Committee. She was appointed a Prothonotary of the Federal Court on June 16, 2016.
